I recently posted some thoughts on investing in a couple of opinion pieces on USA Herald. My main philosophy has been to encourage people to actively invest in things close to home. I want to discourage people from relying on investment vehicles alone. Wall Street fads have hurt a lot of people. So I want to encourage people to be active in building their financial security and future. People spend so of their own time earning money and that money is critical to the good they do for their families and their communities so I have seen repeatedly that nobody will care for that money the way the person who worked for it will. I especially like to see people invest in businesses in their communities. We did that with Altitude Hospitality and our restaurants and I enjoy seeing the impact on the local community.
The News Recorder published an article about this philosophy and it generated some comments and discussion. I hope you will join the conversation and consider my ideas. Please leave a comment and tell me what you think.
My purpose is to empower people to make their own decisions. My Christian teachings tell me to share and to be compassionate and generose and I only want to live up to that. I am not advocating any investment and none of this benefits any of my own interests. I have been blessed and want to see other achieve their goals as well.
More writing on the way
It has been fun and rewarding to contribute the articles so I am writing a business piece for my Business.com column and will probably do more articles on USA Herald. Thank you for visiting.
Money can do a lot of good when channeled properly. I wasn’t born successful, I got that way because I focused my time, passion, determinations and skills toward professional goals. I have lived a blessed life because of my philosophy about work and life. My values and Christian principles are what have helped me achieve my dreams. I give back to share and to make the world a better place and I challenge you to do the same.
Give what you really value
Our behaviors show that we value our time and energy more than money. We trade money for time and energy saving things all the time. So if you really want to give from your heart then give what you really value. Give of yourself don’t just give of your money. Give your time, your passion and your talents. By doing so you share important parts of yourself with other
My Mission to Africa
I have volunteered my time in a lot of ways and traveled the world on several missions. One trip that I feel was especially valuable was my travels with Compassion International to Swaziland Africa. Swaziland is a wonderful county filled with warm people who have a great spirit. I learned from them and from the spirit of the children that Compassion International helps there.
A mission is a special way to give back because you give your whole self. You look people in the eye and understand their needs. The root of Christian giving is compassion and understanding and I value these things in all parts of my life. Charity should not be a transactional thing, that is how you buy things. Charitable work is about problem solving and you can’t do that from a distance or through a checkbook alone. So even if you are not deeply spiritual try giving of yourself. You may not be able to travel the world so focus on doing good near your home. If you have children then Model the behavior you want others to adopt. You will find that you gain at the same time that you give.
I have lived a blessed life. I have a great family, successful businesses and I live surrounded by great people in a great community, Colorado Springs. As I have posted before, I believe strongly in a philosophy that involves trying your hardest, putting in extra effort and giving back. ‘Do good and you will do well,’ is one way to put it.
I think giving back should be done comprehensively. Financial support makes a lot of sense in some cases but not all. And you can give generously but also give of yourself. So for example, I went on a mission to Africa and supported Compassion International with my effort and time as well as other ways. Advising people on how to take control of their own money, control their own investments and be their own back is another way. Giving of your time is a way to enrich yourself and enrich others at the same time.
Sharing Knowledge Is a Way of Giving Back
I have learned a lot of lessons. Some I learned through my trial and error, some I learned by reading and some were taught to me by people in my life. Information and skills are valuable and should be shared freely and openly. That is why I am working to share what I have found can help people to succeed. So one way I am doing that will be to write articles here and on other sites ideas on business and life.
My Business.com Column
Business.com recently accepted me as a contributor. I like the site because it has a small business focus and it focuses on empowering people to do things. They emphasize how-to articles so I am working to write some now. I expect to cover a lot of topics. Some will be leadership while others may focus on management tips. I will try a few and then ask for feedback to see what people find most valuable.
Throughout the United States, people who have invested their hard earned money into their 401k’s and mutual funds will have a shock to the system. They look forward to cashing in those investments for the compounded interest from this giant nest egg they where hoping would be there. It’s a very reassuring idea, but for one thing, it doesn’t work. Well, at least it does not work for most people. They are lead into thinking it will be great come retirement. This is a unbearable shock depending on the time you have put into this before you get an epiphany.
This time and time again story that is told is simply not working. We are taught to build up your wealth slowly with low-risk investing. Told to apply it somewhere safe until you reach the age of a comfortable retirement.
Garden of The Gods Market & Cafe is not just a successful business to me. The restaurant has won accolades and many awards including ‘The Best of Springs’ Gourmet Market by the Gazette. But, to me it reflects a commitment to community and a healthy approach to life that has formed a lot of my life’s work and guiding principles. Farm to table is a great way to get healthy, fresh foods because it relies upon local sourcing.
It also fuels the local economic engine. The system is self-supporting and is focused on its community. Farm to table allows us to provide a better product and to give back and energize small, local businesses into success. Those are not businesses or vendors to me. Each is element of the Colorado Springs community. They are owned and run by people who take pride in their work. They have families who also want to eat in our restaurants and support the community along with us.
Farm to table allows for the produce, fruits and meat products to be produced and delivered in ways that are both more humane and better for the environment than are mass produced products.
A Business Should Reflect The Community That Supports It
When a business is locally owned, locally managed and locally supplied it better reflects the culture and flavor of the people they serve. It also helps to encourage eating foods that reflect the season. That further connects us to our shared experiences. When I lived in Napa in California, my favorite local food producers and eateries reflected all that is unique and wonderful about that area. So when I made Colorado Springs my new home, I wanted to bring that sames sense that eating should connect you to the people and environment around us. I would love to hear from you so please leave a comment or contact me directly.
I love this business because of what it says about Colorado Springs and about me. It reflects my own values and priorities and it allows me to do good while doing well. And, everything tastes great too!
